Police Call Shooting Death of 3-Year-Old an Accident

Garland police say the shooting death of a 3-year-old boy inside his home Wednesday night was a tragic accident.

“It’s just one of these things that is just so sad for the family and the people to have to respond," police spokesman Officer Joe Harn said. "It’s not normal to see a small child die."

Police were called out to the home on Maritime Cove near the President George Bush Turnpike and Interstate 30 at about 6 p.m.

John O’Brien, 3, had been shot in the head with a pistol.

He was rushed to Children’s Medical Center, where he later died.

Investigators said the boys parents and all five of their children, who range in age from 1 to 8 years old, were in the house at the time of the shooting.

Investigators did not say who shot the child or if the child accidentally shot himself.
