Crews Demolish 30-Year-Old Plano Water Tower

Demolition crews "tipped" a Plano water tower Monday morning to make room for a new commercial and residential development, authorities said.

The 178-foot tall water tower near Texas 121 and the Dallas North Tollway was erected in 1985, but it hasn't been used in nearly five years.

The 30-year-old tower was being removed for the planned Legacy West shopping and residential area.

Crews used torches to cut at the base of the tower, a practice known as "tipping," which will cause the tower to crash to the ground similar to a falling tree.

Editor's Note: The City of Plano originally said the water tower was 900-feet-tall. It is only 178-feet-tall.
