Plano Prom Closet Offers Tradition On a Budget

Hundreds of girls are saying “yes” to their prom dresses in Plano this spring.

For the seventh year in a row, St Andrew United Methodist Church’s “Prom Closet”, a volunteer-run boutique that happens once a year, is offering dresses, accessories, shoes and more – all for free.

“It’s the fairy tale for the girls, so we get to see the beginning of it,” said Nancy Adams, a longtime volunteer. “When the parents tear up outside the dressing rooms, we do too!”

NBC 5 caught up with Carrollton prom-goer Gabrielle Villanueva, as she settled on a long black gown with jeweled accents.

“This dress has everything I want,” she said, smiling and twirling.

According to organizers, Prom Closet offers dresses in every size, from 0 to 28.

Because of demand, they’ve moved locations from past years into the Smith Worship Center.

They have about 3,000 dresses to offer shoppers, many of them donated brand new, with tags still on.

The last day this year to find a dress for free is Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon.
