Plane Crashes in Field Southwest of Terrell

The  Kaufman County Sheriff's Office is assisting the Department of Public Safety at the scene of a fatal plane crash southwest of Terrell that happened Monday afternoon.

It happened in the 2600 block of Farm to Market Road 2578 at about 4:30 p.m.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirms a small aerobatic aircraft crashed in a field and one person is dead.

The FAA believes the plane might have been doing aerobatic maneuvers, but cannot confirm this information.

When Chopper 5 arrived very little of the plane wreckage could be seen and firefighters had put out the fire at the scene of the crash.

The plane crashed a few hundred yards from the house where Sheron Hornage lives.

"I really heard the noise before I saw anything it just sounded like the airplane was very low coming over the house," Hornage said. "It was a loud roaring noise."

"It was just fire," Hornage said. "A lot of fire and ash."

The Terrell Airport is only a few miles away from the crash site, but investigators do not know if that is where the plane was headed.

An FAA investigator scoured the wreckage for about an hour and left with local crews at about 9 p.m.

The FAA says the National Transportation Safety Board may have more information tomorrow.
