A pilot from Mexico City has pleaded guilty for his role in drug-trafficking and money laundering conspiracies that smuggled cocaine from Venezuela to the U.S.
U.S. prosecutors say 40-year-old Richard Garcia-Sanchez pleaded guilty Monday, admitting that between 2002 and 2008 he transported controlled substances and U.S. currency which came from drug trafficking.
When he's sentenced in February he faces up to life in federal prison and a possible $4 million fine for the drug offenses and up to 20 years and additional fines for money laundering.
Prosecutors say the Mexico-based organization used private aircrafts to transport the drugs from Venezuela to Mexico, money from the drug sales from the U.S. back to Mexico and money to Venezuela to purchase more drugs. Garcia-Sanchez was among several pilots the organization relied on.
