Parent Hopes School Campout Worth $1K

AISD parents camp out for shot at transferring schools

Parents who have been camping out at the Arlington Independent School District's headquarters have one more night of roughing it.

Dozens of parents have been camped out for weeks to get their children transferred into top schools that are not in their district or schools that offer special classes not offered at their home school.

In an effort to get his daughter, Sheridan, into Butler Elementary, Joe Garbe has paid someone $1,000 to camp out in a tent in his place

"I have not spent one night here," he said. "I just stay here during the day."

Is it worth $1,000?

"We will see," Garbe said. "Right now there's no positions open for Butler, but things change, so we will see what happens."

Other parents have been spending nights in the parking lot.

Shelley Eakman and her family have taken refuge from the past few nights' cold in her brother-in-law's RV.

Angela Jasper has slept in her car, covered in blankets, since Friday night.

"It's freezing cold," she said. "I wish it was 80 degrees like it was earlier this week."

She and another parent, John Taylor, are hoping to get their kindergarteners into highly recognized Hill Elementary.

"It's been cold, very cold," Taylor said.

He said he has spent several frigid nights in an RV.

"It's been a little tough on us, but we will do it for our kids," Taylor said.

He said he'll find out if it's been worth it once next year's report cards come rolling in.

The official list of parents who have been camping out is posted on the Arlington ISD's front door. At 5 a.m. Monday, parents will line up to sign up.
