Pakistani Gets 20 Years in U.S. Prison for $100M Drug Scam

Man ran multiple illegal websites selling counterfeit prescription drugs

Prosecutors in Texas say a man from Pakistan must serve 20 years in a U.S. prison for his role in an online $100 million counterfeit prescription drugs ring.

Muhammad Aijaz Sarfraz of Karachi was sentenced Wednesday in federal court in Sherman.

Jurors last May convicted the 52-year-old Sarfraz of conspiracy to manufacture and distribute controlled substances and international money laundering conspiracy.

Investigators say the scam began in 2009. Sarfraz in 2012 was indicted in Texas and arrested.

Authorities say he helped operate numerous illegal websites for distributing counterfeit prescription drugs throughout the U.S.

Experts say the pills, which were made to look like authentic prescriptions, often contained incorrect active ingredients or the wrong dosage.
