Owner Escapes Fire at Bridgeport Spa

An early-morning fire in Bridgeport ripped through at least one business and two others may be damaged.

At about 1:15 a.m., a police officer on patrol spotted smoke coming from crom the roof of a building on the 1100 block of Halsell Street. The officer called firefighters who arrived to find heavy fire burning through Zoo Lou's Tanning Spa & Select Gift Shop.

The building also houses two other tenants, Trinity Chiropractic and Bridgeport Cleaners.

The Bridgeport Fire Department, made up of volunteers, called for backup from six nearby departments to keep the fire from spreading and to tap out the blaze.

Officials said the chiropractic office appears to only have smoke and water damage and the cleaners may have escaped damage completely.

The fire marshal said he didn't expect to be able to enter the building until Wednesday afternoon , at which point they'll try to determine what started the fire.

The owner of the spa, who was the only person inside the building when the fire broke out, was able to escape without injury, officials said. No injuries have been reported.
