One-Time ‘American Idol' Singer Jailed

FW native stages ‘jailed’ publicity stunt advancing CD

Tim Halperin deserves style points for self-promotion.

Then again, the native Fort Worth singer deserves point reductions for whining about his artistic situation, one for which any number of people would self-amputate appendages to experience.

Halperin — a one-time contestant on “American Idol” — climbed into a symbolic cage, likely gilded, at 5 a.m., Sept. 26. He plans to emerge at 9 a.m., Sept. 27, from the “jail,” located at Dallas’ West Village, to coincide with the expiration of his “American Idol” contract, his artistic fredom, and release of his CD, titled "Rise and Fall."

See, Halperin, like all “American Idol” participants, signed a contract prohibiting the release of any recordings for a certain period of time after his appearances on the show. The TCU grad — who, according to the official press release, “made it to the Top 24” — characterized the prohibition period as “like being in prison.”

Certainly this tortured soul knew of the restrictions before signing the contract and taking a shot at idol-status. Bemoaning it after the fact seems somewhat akin to moving into a neighborhood adjacent to Love Field and complaining about the noise two days later. You kind of knew what you were getting into.

But, hey, enjoy that incarceration.
