Woman Fatally Shot by Father of Her Child

An 8-month-old baby will grow up without his mother after police say she was shot and killed by the child's father late Wednesday night.

The attempted murder-suicide happened at the Prima Vera apartment complex on Berry Street in fort worth.

Police said Raheem Smith will survive his self-inflicted gunshot wound and be charged with murder after he gets out of the hospital.

Family members identified the victim as Tasha McDay. McDay's cousin said she doesn't live at the Prima Vera apartment complex but had been staying with her sister.

Late Wednesday night, police said Smith confronted the victim in the courtyard of the apartment complex. After shooting her, police said Smith shot himself in an attempted suicide.

"I couldn't sleep last night and even now I still go around there [to the courtyard] and see there's still blood there. You can't dry up blood, you can't wash away blood," said cousin Joyce Spearman.

Smith was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and is still in the intensive care unit, but police said he's expected to survive.

Spearman said McDay broke up with Smith a few weeks ago. McDay has three children, including the child with Smith.

Spearman said she heard the gunshots from her apartment and ran outside, but it was too late.

"I heard the gunshots. I won't lie to you, but I didn't know it was here," she said. "I heard, 'Boom! Boom! Boom!'"

"That's when my daughter ran around and I hear her say, 'It's Tasha, Mom. He done kill Tasha, Mom.' I said, 'No, no.' And when I made it outside, she was laying out, dead on the ground, right there."

McDay's mother is at the coroner’s office to identify her body. She's also taking care of the victim's young child.
