Second Person Dies After McKinney House Fire

A second person has died after a fire tore through a home in McKinney Thursday afternoon.

The McKinney Fire Department was called to the home in the 500 block of Rocky Spring Drive, just north of Virginia Parkway, at about 1 p.m., but authorities say calls for help were delayed.

Authorities say a woman who escaped the fire did not speak English well and neighbors had no idea what the problem was.

"She was knocking on the door and was screaming," said Stacie Durham of the McKinney Fire Department. "There was a language barrier. The neighbor could not understand what she was saying. But she surmised there was a problem definitely across the street."

By the time firefighters arrived, smoke was billowing from the two-story home.

One man died at the scene according to the fire department. He was later identified as 55-year-old Abrar Khan.

A woman who was found unconscious inside the home was rushed to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, where she later died from her injuries. Officials identified her Friday as 47-year-old Talat Khan.

The woman who escaped the fire and screamed for help, 77-year-old Miam Amtul, was taken to Baylor Medical Center for treatment.

"I'm just shocked. I'm just shocked to find that somebody was actually killed in the house," said neighbor Michael Quickley.

"They seemed like nice people, that's all I can say," said Quickley. "It's a sad thing to hear."

Investigators are trying to determine how the fire started.

They said bystanders reported hearing no smoke alarms in the home. Firefighters and workers with the American Red Cross will go door-to-door in the neighborhood around Rocky Springs Drive on Wednesday evening, April 29, starting at 5:30 p.m. to check and install smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms.
