Old, Beat Up Textbooks Upset North Texas Mom

A fifth grade spelling book has been in circulation since 1998

A Hunt County mother says her fifth grade daughter is using an old, beat up text book that should've been thrown out years ago.

The spelling and vocabulary book is assigned to students at Bland Elementary School.

"I couldn't believe it. The back cover was completely ripped. It was missing pieces. I opened up the front cover and it's full of signatures and people's writing. The front was all damaged," said Leesa Lane. "It looks to me that it should've been in the trash a long time ago. It shouldn't be in circulation and handed out to classes."

Bland ISD superintendent Rick Tidwell admitted the entire set of fifth grade spelling books were in bad shape. He said the teacher uses the book as a supplement.

"While the textbook in question is old, it is one resource being used by our fifth grade teacher in her English Language Arts curriculum. The ELA curriculum encompasses Spelling, but we teach spelling in a more progressive manner involved within Reading and Writing," said Tidwell, in a statement. "Sometimes the teacher would like to be more specific with her “Spelling” assignment so she uses the old spelling books."

"All other books within the school are on a state cycle for adoption. Our current English Language Arts books and Reading books are up to date," Tidwell added. "Our students are of utmost concern to us and we want to make sure that they receive the best quality that we can give them."
