Fort Worth police said an officer injured a man wielding an 11-inch pot fork outside a home early Tuesday morning. [[309262241,C]]

The man began banging on his neighbor's door on the 1300 block of New York Avenue at 3:28 a.m., police said. The resident saw the man holding what appeared to be an 11-inch knife and called police.

Police arrived at the home and ordered the man to drop his weapon. When the man didn't, the officer fired one shot at the man, striking him in the arm.

"The officer arrives on scene and sees someone in the street carrying a large 11-inch weapon, what appears to be a knife, and he's not following commands," Fort Worth Police Department Spokesman Steve Enright said. "It's terrifying."

After the shooting, police said they realized the man was holding a large pot fork.

The man was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life threatening.

Enright said the officer is on routine administrative leave while police investigate the shooting. The officer's body camera was not activated before the shooting, but the dashboard camera captured the incident.

"Because of the immediacy of coming on the scene seeing this person in the street armed with this large knife, he was not able to activate it," Enright said.

NBC 5's Ellen Bryan contributed to this report.
