Officer-Involved Shooting in Highland Park

Two officers have been placed on administrative leave after a shooting in Highland Park on Tuesday, Highland Park police said.

Police received a 911 call at about 6:25 p.m. about a suspicious person on a motorcycle who was following a resident through town.

Two officers found a motorcycle matching the description parked in the shopping center at 3000 Mockingbird Lane.

When the driver returned to the motorcycle, officers tried to question him, but the man ran.

After a brief chase, officers detained the man and placed him in the back of a patrol vehicle.

The man freed himself from handcuffs and fired a small handgun he had in his possession, shattering the window of the car.

Both officers fired back, hitting the man.

The man, whose identity has not been released, was taken by ambulance to Parkland Hospital. His condition has not been released.

A witness in a Mercedes showed NBC 5 where a bullet had hit the hood of his car.

"The policemen were firing real low," the witness told NBC 5. "And so we didn't know what was happening because the suspect had jumped out of the back seat of the car and the policemen came around and started shooting."

Police said the man had an outstanding warrant for previously fleeing another police agency and that the motorcycle had been reported stolen.

The two officers were not injured during the gunfire. They have been placed on administrative leave.

No additional details have been provided at this time.

NBC 5's Omar Villafranca contributed to this report.
