Police: Man Wanted Officers to Shoot Him

Dallas Police Investigate Officer-Involved Shooting

Police said they are still investigating after a Dallas officer shot at a robbery suspect with a gun and a Taser Wednesday.

Officers said they responded to a robbery call at about 5:15 p.m. in the 4800 block of Maple Avenue. When they arrived, the man they were looking for fled into a wooded area.

Police said when they spotted the man, later identified as 48-year-old Jimmy Cupples, Jr., they gave him verbal commands to come out, but he refused.

Officers told NBC 5 they went into the woods to arrest Cupples and said they believed he was reaching for a weapon. At that time, officer Ryan Walls fired his gun, but missed Cupples.

Officers then began to physically struggle with Cupples. Shortly after that, Walls deployed a stun gun, which helped them make an arrest.

Cupples admitted to the initial reported robbery, police said, and also told them he was trying to force officers to shoot him because he wanted to die.

No officers were injured.

Police said they recovered a handgun and they continue to investigate.
