Officer Hospitalized After Hit by Suspected Drunk Driver

A Garland Police Officer was hit by a drunk driver early Sunday morning while he stood by his squad car, the department said.

The officer arrested a woman on the George Bush Tollway near Holford Road at 1 a.m. Sunday.  He had just put her in the back seat of his squad car when another car veered of the road and onto the shoulder, Garland Police Department public information officer Joe Harn said in a news release.

The officer was rushed to Parkland Memorial Hospital by medical helicopter in serious condition.   He has several broken bones that will require surgery to be corrected, Harn said.

Doctors worked to stabilize the officer overnight.

The officer’s name was not released. Police said he has been in law enforcement for five years.

The man who hit the officer and the officer’s prisoner were transported to Baylor Hospital of Garland with non life-threatening injuries, Harn said.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the crash.
