Dallas police are investigating the reported theft of an off-duty Dallas County Community College District officer's handgun.

The theft was reported around 1:20 a.m. Wednesday in the 6400-block of Ridgecrest Road. The man, whose name has not been released, works overnights as a security guard at an apartment complex on that road.

Detectives on the scene told NBC 5 that the crime was being investigated as a theft and not a robbery, indicating that the officer was not confronted or assaulted when his weapon was taken.
