Oak Cliff Homeowner Startled By Stranger in House

Dallas police are looking into a possible interrupted burglary that happened Wednesday morning in the Winnetka Heights neighborhood of Oak Cliff.

Police said a man walked in through an unlocked backyard fence on the 300 block of South Rosemont and then through the home's back door and yelled a name in the house.

“I had just gotten off the phone and I heard a strange voice in the kitchen,” said homeowner Chris Bolding. “Then I thought maybe one of the kids left a computer on or something, and there was a man standing there staring at me.”

Bolding had never seen the man before.

“I said, 'Can I help you?' And he was like, ‘Yeah, do you need some chairs or something,’ and I was like, 'No! What are you doing in my house?'”she said.

After the face-to-face encounter the man turned calmly around and walked right out and continued down the street until he went into someone else’s backyard, Bolding said.

“In retrospect it’s pretty darn scary. Of course, my first instinct was what if he had a weapon?” she said.

Now, the mother of three says she’s always making sure to reach for the door locks.

“Break-ins can happen, and it can be very quiet. And, you know, if I had just been sitting there and he’d been a little quieter, he could have gotten a lot further and I may have startled him and that’s what I worry about the most,” she said.

NBC 5 has learned someone has been taken into custody and is being questioned about the break-in.
