OU Student from Garland First to See Video of Racist Chant

A University of Oklahoma student from Garland was the first to see the racist chant video sent to the group OU Unheard, which then posted it on Twitter.

“My jaw definitely dropped. That was my first reaction,” student Naome Kadira told NBC’s Gabe Gutierrez. “And seeing the emotion on their faces - the fist pumping, the smiling and the loud chants, the passion in their voices - that was like, wow.”

The 21-year-old accounting student graduated from Rowlett High School in 2012.

“This issue is bigger than this video,” Kadira said. “I really hope that this brings light to things that individuals and groups within the black community are facing.”

Now, her family in Garland is worried for her safety.

“We are kind of scared for her, for her life because not all people will be happy,” said father Watson Kadira.

But he’s proud of what she and OU Unheard did.

“It’s a legacy that she has just left on that school,” he said. "Things are not going to be the same way anymore.”

Naome Kadira said she did not know either Parker Rice or Levi Pettit, the two North Texas students identified from the video.
