Northeast Texas Man on Trial for Officer's Death

A 22-year-old Northeast Texas man faces up to life in prison is he's convicted of murder for the hit-and-run death of Texarkana police officer last year.

The trial of Justin Miles Sanders was moved to Rockwall County near Dallas on a change of venue. The Texarkana Gazette reports closing arguments are expected Monday.

Sanders is charged with running over 30-year-old Texarkana officer Jason Sprague while fleeing a possible marijuana arrest during an illegal party involving about 100 people at a closed city park last June. Sprague was the first officer to respond to a call that people were fighting and using drugs.

He died a day later.

In a videotaped statement to police and shown to jurors, Sanders acknowledged smoking pot but denied involvement in the officer's death.
