Northeast Dallas Renters Go Days Without Air Conditioning in Unusual Fall Heat

The weather in North Texas has been unusually hot for fall, and so has Valerie Sutton's apartment in northeast Dallas.

"It feels better outside than in my house," Sutton said. "It's 85, 90 degrees, inside."

Sutton lives at The Alista apartments, and she said her air conditioning stopped working last Thursday. She called NBC 5 on Monday after enduring a weekend with temperatures near 90 degrees outside.

"We shouldn't have to deal with this type of thing for this many days," Sutton said.

"It felt like it was set on the heater," Sutton said.

She believes the heat caused her 12-year old son to have an asthma attack.

"He could barely breathe inside the house," she said.

And Sutton's family isn't alone. Several other residents told NBC 5 they, too, did not have A/C.

"Yeah, it's hot, isn't it?" asked Amy Elliott, standing inside her apartment. "He (maintenance) told me he was going to bring a portable A/C. I have nothing. Just a fan, like in the old days."

The apartment complex has several hundred units, but not all of them are on the chiller system that seems to be the root of the problem.

"This has been going on since Thursday," Sutton said, frustrated about what she said was a lack of communication from apartment management. "Today is Monday and they haven't passed out any notices."

Sutton said she was considering going to a hotel Monday night.

NBC 5 tried to reach The Alista management for comment, but as of Monday night, did not get a return call.
