North Texas Lakes Rising Once Again

North Texas lakes continue to rise after the Thanksgiving weekend rainfall – closing many parks, recreation areas and boat ramps once again.

"Everything's operating at a pretty limited capacity," said Kenneth Myers, with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. "Even if the parks are open, they're only what you can get to and what you can access."

Just days after it reopened from the record spring flooding, the Vineyards Campground on Lake Grapevine is once again closed. The nearly 200 campers who spent Thanksgiving weekend there were told to leave on Sunday.

"We already had practice this year, so we knew what to expect and how to prepare for it and how to get people out safely," said Randy Sell, with the city of Grapevine Parks & Recreation Department. "But we sure didn't want to do that to them, especially on a holiday weekend."

Cabins are once again being moved to higher ground, with runoff into the lake expected to raise the Lake Grapevine another three feet or more by the end of the week.

With the return of high water, the campground and other flooded areas will likely stay closed through the winter.

"We're hoping to be springtime to get people back in here," said Sell.
