North Texas Hail Storms Come With Hefty Price

Estimates for Collin County damage alone approach $500 million

Last week's severe weather caused an estimated $500 million in damage in Collin County, according to the Insurance Council of Texas.

Hail pummeled cars and homes in several areas, including Plano, Carrollton and Wylie.

The week before, the Insurance Council of Texas estimated $600 million in auto and property claims in Tarrant County.

State Farm Insurance received 5,390 home claims and 9,040 auto claims in the Collin County storm.

"Texas is no stranger to severe weather," said State Farm Insurance spokesman Chris Pilcic. "Who knows what time the one will hit tomorrow. You always have to keep a careful watch on the forecast and know when these are coming."

State Farm opened a satellite catastrophe office in Plano on Tuesday.

Pilcic said the satellite location will see about 100 customers a day through the end of the week.
