North Texas Company Hand-Makes Cowboy Hat for Donald Trump

Day in and day out, hundreds of hats are hand-made at American Hat Company in Bowie.

But never in more than 100 years of business has there been a hat quite like the one they made for President-elect Donald Trump this month.

"There's lots of buzz. We’ve got phones ringing off the wall people wanting hats, people wanting to know about the hat itself for Donald Trump,” said production manager Cody Bates.

Bates says the 1,000x mink cowboy hat made with 100-percent belly beaver with a mink blend inside the hat.

The outside features a 14-karat gold buckle set with three diamonds.

"It's the best hat that we make,” Bates said.

The quality is apparently what stood out when Trump spotted Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller sporting his signature cowboy hat last month.

“He said 'I love Sid Miller’s hat. I don’t know where he got it, but I'm going to find out because I want one,'” Bates explained.

Bates says the company owner’s daughter is also friends with Trump’s son, Eric.

“We got him involved and that’s how we got the finished product,” Bates said.

He says the process took two days. They included a label inside with Trump’s name, soon-to-be title and the date of his inauguration.

"To actually have the President of the United States wear your hat, that's truly what's important, truly special to us,” Bates said.

Bates says American Hat Company makes about 1,000 similar hats each year.

They retail for between $2,800 and $3,000.

Trump's hat will be shipped to Las Vegas on Friday where it will be displayed for a couple weeks before being delivered to the President-elect.
