North Texans Supply Up for School

Students in several North Texas school districts got a helping hand Saturday morning as community members came together to help them prepare for back-to-school.

In the Dallas ISD members of the Wilmer-Hutchins Alumni Association hosted their annual back-to-school extravaganza.

Families packed into the high school before the event even started at 9am to grab some school supplies and get some guidance for the school year.

"We want to give them something to get ready to start their school year with," said alumni
president Sha Brewer-Greer. "We're not supplying all of their school supplies, but we're giving them a good head start."

District leaders showed parents how to access the online school portal and how to get involved at their students' schools this year.

More than a dozen sponsors also provided games, attractions, and food to give the students a little bit of fun during their last days of summer.

On the other side of the Metroplex city leaders in Fort Worth helped make sure some of their most under served communities got a hand before the start of school.

More than 700 students were given free backpacks, school supplies, and uniforms for their schools.

The Gene and Jerry Jones Family Foundation and the Dallas Cowboys helped make it memorable, donating $10,000 to supply the students, and sending Rowdy and the Cowboys Cheerleaders to pose for pictures and lead the party.

Several lucky students even won brand-new bicycles donated by some of the many sponsors involved.

Mayor Price said the event targets families in the Polytechnic and Stop Six neighborhoods of East Fort Worth; communities that tend to be lower income and under served.

"We want to encourage these kids to get enthused about school, to know that it's their future, and it's the future of the city," said Mayor Price.

Other districts across the area held similar events over the past few weeks.
