North Texan Loses Her Home, Business in Deadly Storm

A North Texas woman seeking help at the Garland Disaster Recovery Center lost her home and business in the tornado.

Valerie Currie owns Taste This Pickle located near I-30 and President George Bush Turnpike.

Currie was at work when the tornado barreled through the area.

"I lost my house, I lost my business and my storage unit with all of my inventory," said Currie. "Everything is gone. Everything."

The multi-agency resource center located at Granger Recreation Center in Garland will close at 3 p.m. Sunday. It will reopen on Tuesday as a recovery assistance center.

Officials say organizations will transition the focus to long term recovery needs.

"We've been seeing 300-400 people a day," said Garland Fire Department spokesman Merrill Balanciere. "We'll see who's all going to be back on Tuesday, but we will still have plenty of resources."

The recovery assistance center's mission is to meet long term recovery needs such as housing, mental health needs, and financial needs not covered by insurance. The RAC will continue to serve as a donation drop-off and distribution center, accepting only new items as donations going forward.
