New Bill Introduced in TX to Stop Recording Police

A committee hearing has been postponed regarding a controversial bill authored by a North Texas State Representative.

Representative Jason Villalba introduced a bill that would make it a misdemeanor to record police within 15 feet.

Villalba said the bill was “primarily for independent bloggers who are focused on keeping law enforcement accountable.”

His office adds it is for protection of both sides.

This bill has become controversial and Villalba’s spokesperson says he has received threats. The Department of Public safety is on watch, and Dallas police are checking on him and his family.

Governor Greg Abbott was in Dallas on Thursday, and NBC 5 asked him about the bill.

“I think it’s important not to put public limitations on public access, including viewing like that. I don’t know where it stands in the legislative process. I have a perception that it may not gain much traction,” said Abbott.
