The North Texas Food Bank now has a better way to keep track of the food it distributes to those in need.
The official launch of the new Commodities and Supplemental Food Program database was held at the West Dallas Multipurpose Center on Fish Trap Road on Wednesday.
The new database was made possible by a 21st Century Solutions Grant by the NBC Universal Foundation. The grant provided $50,000 to get the new database up and running.
"The database is going to make the intake process smoother for our clients, and help keep more effective records,” said North Texas Food Bank spokesperson Diana Carranza.
The new data base replaces an outdated program that had been used by the food bank for years.
The new database was developed by Link2Feed. It is the first type of database of its kind to be used in the United States.
It took six months of work to develop the new system, and North Texas Food Bank workers about a week of training to become familiar with it.
