Multi-Vehicle Hazmat Crash Closes Westbound I-30

A multi-vehicle crash that caused an 18-wheeler to spill diesel fuel on the roadway closed the westbound lanes of Interstate 30 at Sylvan Avenue for more than six hours on Monday.

Around 3:45 a.m. Monday, the Dallas Sheriff's Office found two vehicles had been involved in the crash. Deputies said a Kia make car with two people aboard struck the crash attenuator at the exit for Sylvan Avenue and then bounced into traffic.

Following that initial collision, DSO personnel said an 18-wheeler struck the car, then crash into the traffic barrier in the HOV lane. The crash damaged the truck's trailer and ruptured the truck's diesel tank, leading to a spillage that required Dallas Fire Rescue's Hazardous Materials workers to clean up.

Additionally, the trailer, which was carrying around 20,000 pounds of auto parts, had to be removed with a specialized second trailer, requiring extra time for clean-up.

Both the driver of the truck and the two passengers in the car were said to have minor injuries.

One lane of the freeway was able to be opened by 10 a.m., but others remain closed while crews continue clean-up work.
