Former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk is being considered for one of two high-level positions in President-elect Barack Obama's administration.

A high-level Democratic source told NBC 5 Kirk is being considered for either secretary of transportation or another high-level position in the Obama administration. In both cases, Kirk is one of only a couple of people in the running, the source said.

The source said he believes it is likely Obama will choose Kirk for one of the positions because Obama "likes Kirk a lot and they have been friends for some time."

Earlier this week, Kirk was in Washington, D.C., for high-level meetings with Obama's transition team.

It is not clear when a decision will be made.

The former mayor currently serves as a lawyer with the Vinson & Elkins law firm.
