Mounted Patrol May Stay on McKinney Payroll

The McKinney police mounted patrol unit may not be trading in the reins after all.

This week, city council members approved a revised budget that would allow the unit to stay on the payroll.

Hundreds of "Keep the Mounted Patrol" signs went up in front of homes and businesses this summer after it was learned the unit could be cut from the budget.

An initial proposal called for the three officers to be transferred to squad cars.

The officers and their horses have been a mainstay in the historic downtown district for years. Many feel they're a better fit for downtown than police cruisers.

Supporters collected more than 750 signatures on a petition that was presented to city council Tuesday.

The city council will vote on a final budget Sept. 15.
