Mother of Slain 3-Year-Old Charged With Injury to a Child by Omission

Children allegedly said woman did not try to stop boyfriend

Dallas police have charged the mother of a 3-year-old boy whose death triggered an Amber Alert last week.

Detectives arrested Catalina Garcia, 21, on suspicion of injury to a child by omission, a first-degree felony. Police said Garcia did not do enough to protect 3-year-old Josiah Garcia.

Her son died of multiple blunt force injuries at a local hospital last week.

Christopher Garcia, Catalina Garcia's boyfriend, is charged with capital murder in the beating death.

The victim's 8-year-old brother and 5-year-old sister told police about alleged beatings and said their mother did nothing to stop them.

On Nov. 16, police investigating the 3-year-old's death issued an Amber Alert after learning Christopher Garcia had disappeared with his 8-month-old daughter with Catalina Garcia and the woman's 4-year-old son.

The children were dropped off at a relative's home and brought to a police station later that night.

Christopher Garcia was also arrested the night the Amber Alert was issued.

In interviews with police, the 8-year-old and 5-year-old reportedly said they witnessed Christopher Garcia often beating their younger brother for things such as wetting himself.

The four children are in foster care, and Child Protective Services is investigating the family.

Catalina Garcia is being held at the Dallas County jail early Wednesday morning on a $500,000 bond.
