A state education report shows the majority of the third-graders will be promoted to the fourth grade given their passing rates on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills reading test this spring.

Texas Education Agency officials announced Thursday that 93 percent of third-grade students passed the reading exam.

Students in fifth and eighth grade must pass both the reading and math TAKS to advance to the next grade.

Eighty-nine percent of fifth-graders and 95 percent of eighth-graders passed the TAKS reading test.

Results released last month showed that fifth- and eighth-graders didn't do as well on the math test. Results from the May math retest aren't available yet.

Students who failed can try again this summer.
