Mosquito Tests Positive for West Nile Virus in Dallas County

Dallas County health officials confirm that a mosquito has tested positive for carrying West Nile virus.

An official with Dallas County Health and Human Services told NBC 5 that the department will release information Thursday on the county's first detected West Nile virus mosquito of the season.

The mosquito tested positive for West Nile virus in the High Point area of Dallas County -- the area north of Farm-to-Market Road 1382 and west of U.S. Highway 67.

The month of May is typically when the West Nile virus season begins, but recent rain and warm temperatures may have prompted an early start to the season.

Dallas County health officials started preparations on April 1 by deploying mosquito traps.

Any area where the virus is detected will be sprayed within 48 hours, according the Dallas County health officials. The health department will begin ground spraying Thursday night and crews will spray the area again on April 28.

In 2012, 20 people died from complications related to the West Nile virus in Dallas County.

Last year, there were two deaths reported in Dallas County connected to the virus.

In Denton, the city announced that it is at a West Nile Risk Level 2 on Wednesday.
