Mom Charged in Connection to Prom Night Death of Son's Date

Houston police say a woman whose son was charged with aggravated assault in his prom date's death has been arrested on drug and alcohol charges in the case.

Police say Melissa Ann Martinez, arrested Thursday, admitted providing alcohol and narcotics to 18-year-old Eddie Herrera and 17-year-old Jacqueline Gomez. The Houston Chronicle reports a prosecutor says Herrera told investigators he and Gomez took hydrocodone and drank whiskey that night.

Gomez was found dead in a hotel room after her May prom. Police arrested Herrera in January. They said he admitted to choking her. Her cause of her death remains under investigation.

Martinez is charged with two counts of manufacturing/delivering a controlled substance and one count of purchasing/furnishing alcohol to a minor. Released on bond, her home number went unanswered.
