Missy Bevers Honored in 5K Race

It has been six months since the brutal murder of Missy Bevers.

While friends and family are still seeking justice, Saturday morning they remembered Bevers just the way she would have wanted.

Bevers was a trainer for a fitness group called Camp Gladiator. She was preparing to teach a class when she was killed.

Saturday morning, fellow trainers held the first annual Downtown Dash 5K in her memory.

“The reason why is we have had enough negativity in the last six months. This is an opportunity to say, 'Hey, this is part of what Missy did’,” said Renee Jones.

Jones is the regional director for Camp Gladiator. She was also Bevers’ friend.

“She had my baby sitting in her lap in the middle of the meetings. She was family. She was family just like all the other CG trainers,” she said.

Bevers was found murdered inside a church in Midlothian located only six miles from the finish line of Saturday's 5K race. Despite surveillance video of a person inside the church before her murder, six months later hear death remains unsolved.

Missy's family and friends at the race said they're holding out hope an arrest will be made.

“Like everybody else, of course I do, but am I going to lose sleep over it anymore? It's happened and we're in a situation, personally, my belief is, we're in a situation where we have to move on,” Jones said.

So, as the hundred or so joggers wound their way through the streets of Waxahachie you get the feeling the run is also a turning point for a community ready to push past the pain.

Proceeds from the run will go to the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club of Waxahachie, where Bevers volunteered.

Last week, the reward for information leading to an arrest and indictment in the case was increased from $20,000 to $50,000.
