Mild Winter Could Lead to Big Year for Bugs Ahead

North Texas exterminators expect a banner year for insects.

"The mild winter that we had really allows insect populations to build up very quickly," said Larry Novy, with Arrow Exterminators in Grand Prairie. "They're sitting there waiting right now for just the right temperature. Once we start getting up into the 70s on a regular basis, you're going to see a multitude of insects start blossoming out."

Odorous house ants are already invading homes across North Texas, with many more insects soon to follow.

"The mosquito population itself will build up very quickly because there's large number of them out there," said Novy.

Mosquitoes can survive the North Texas winters, and with the large number of adults last fall because of warm temperatures and late rains, they may emerge this spring in larger numbers than normal.

Novy recommends that homeowners trim shrubs away from buildings, and remove any debris piled near exterior walls.

"If homeowners eliminate this now, it's one of the best things they can do to prevent problems this spring, this summer," said Novy.
