Midland Man Charged With Starting Fire to Kill Girlfriend

A West Texas man has been accused of starting a deadly house fire after the body of his 55-year-old girlfriend was found in the rubble.

Midland County jail records show 50-year-old Johnny Wayne Robertson was being held Tuesday on a murder charge, with $1 million bond.

Midland police found Robertson in a ditch near the site of Monday's fire. The body of Jennifer Sockey was in the burned-out home.

Investigators say the couple had a history of domestic violence. An affidavit says Robertson told authorities that he hit Sockey and left her dazed on a bed before allegedly starting the blaze, using lighter fluid.

Online jail records don't list a defense attorney to comment on the case.

An injured dog found at the burned home had to be euthanized.
