Mexican Gets Prison, Tried to Mail Cans of Cocaine

A man from Mexico has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for trying to mail aluminum cans filled with cocaine from a South Texas post office.

A federal judge in Brownsville on Wednesday sentenced 25-year-old Juan Antonio Rendon-Diaz, who faces deportation following his prison term. Prosecutors say Rendon-Diaz was in the U.S. illegally and living in Harlingen when he was arrested last April.

Investigators set up surveillance after Rendon-Diaz and several men acted suspiciously at a post office. Rendon-Diaz was arrested at another Harlingen post office while trying to mail a package that turned out to contain cocaine.

Rendon-Diaz in September pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.

Three others convicted in the case were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 20 months to six years.
