Mesquite Police Identify Man Shot in Chase With Officers

Mesquite police have released the name of a man shot by police as he drove a rental van toward a police officer during a chase on Saturday.

Officials said 34-year-old Corey Deandrea Cardell was first involved in a domestic disturbance and then led police on a chase that reached speeds of up to 90 mph.

During the chase, police said Cardell stopped in front of the Camelot Village Apartments and ran into the community on foot. Inside, police said he ran up to a rented moving truck and forced a man inside to get out. Cardell drove the rental van toward Officer Nicolas Sierra, who was approaching on foot.  Sierra, an 8-year veteran of the Mesquite police, then fired several rounds into the cab of the truck, at least one of which hit Cardell.

Cardell managed to drive to a nearby 7-Eleven where he surrendered to police.

Cardell is now in the custody of the Dallas County Sheriff's Department and has been charged with aggravated assault against a public servant, family violence assault, possession of marijuana (under 2 oz), evading arrest and unauthorized use of a vehicle.
