Officer Shoots One of Three Carjacking Suspects

A Mesquite police officer opened fire following an armed robbery, carjacking and chase Wednesday morning.

A man says three men stole his wallet and car at gunpoint at about 12:30 a.m. on the 3600-block of Byrd Drive.

Two of the men in the stolen car refused to pull over for police before bailing out at Aloha and Bahamas Drives.

One of the men, DeShon Jackson, was taken into custody right away. A second man, Keith Simon, was arrested in a getaway car.

Police say the third man, DeMarcus Shorter, took off running through backyards and had his hands around his waist. An officer chasing him says Shorter stopped and quickly raised his hands. The officer feared for his life and shot Shorter in his lower back.

Shorter is expected to survive and will face charges for aggravated robbery.

Shorterโ€™s accomplices, Jackson and Simon, will also face aggravated robbery charges.

A grand jury will decide if the shooting was justified by the officer who's been with the department seven years.

Police say these three suspects are believed to be involved in a series of recent robberies.
