Mesquite High School Teacher/Coach Charged With Improper Relationship

According to the Mesquite Independent School District, 26-year-old teacher and coach Nigel Chandler is accused of having a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old female student.

The district said Wednesday they were sent a tip about the relationship on Feb. 13, just three days after the incident was alleged to have occurred.

After officials interviewed both the student and Chandler, an arrest warrant was issued in his name on Tuesday.

Chandler surrendered to authorities at 7 a.m. Wednesday and was released after posting $20,000 bond.

The Dallas Morning News reports Chandler has been an employee of the district since 2012 and has been placed on leave.

According to the Mesquite High School website, Chandler taught health and coached JV football as well as freshman and varsity boys basketball. While the district confirmed the student did attend Mesquite High School, it is not known if she was enrolled in one of Chandler's classes.

Under Texas law a teacher can be found guilty of having an improper relationship with a student if they engage in sexual contact and if the teacher either works at the same school as the student or within the same school district, regardless of the students age. The charge is a second-degree felony, according to the Texas Penal Code.
