McKinney ISD School Buses Outfitted with New Safety Measure

The McKinney Independent School District says motorists are speeding through school bus stops and ignoring student drop offs and pick ups.

It's a problem bus drivers in McKinney say they see about 20 times a day.

"They're seeing a dramatic increase in the number of cars that are driving around our buses," McKinney ISD Chief Communications Officer Cody Cunningham said. "Every month, they have several near-misses where students are exiting a bus and a car drives around illegally."

In hopes of preventing an accident, McKinney ISD and Durham School Services have taken new measures by installing longer bus stop arms.

The arms are six-feet long and more visible.

"We're trying to prevent something very bad from happening," Durham School Services McKinney General Manager Pete Chancellor said.

Bus Safety Solutions installed the new stop arms, which cost about $1,000 each, on 10 buses that run routes in high traffic areas such as Highway 5 and Highway 380.

McKinney ISD is the first district in the state to use the extended bus stop arms.
