McKinney Avenue Trolley Gets Makeover for Holidays

The McKinney Avenue Transit Authority is restoring the Green Dragon trolley for Christmas

It is history on trolley tracks, and it is set to get rolling in Dallas just in time for the holidays.

The McKinney Avenue Transit Authority is restoring the Green Dragon trolley.

Workers said when the project is complete the trolley will look like it did in 1954. Back in the 1950s, the trolley made stops near Southern Methodist University, and students there nicknamed it the Green Dragon.

The restoration effort is aimed at making sure the trolley is ready to go before Christmas.

"It's a great Christmas present for the people of Dallas," said McKinney Avenue Transit Authority COO John Landrum. "It's good to see the smile it brings to people when it goes by and the children who see it."

Robert Opel is the painter. He said he has spent more than 30 hours painting the trolley.

"You kind of lose track of time when you're having this much fun," Opel said. "It's all for the holidays."

The entire project will still cost more than $50,000, but volunteers have played a big role in the restoration, according to Landrum.
