Investigators said the man and woman were sitting in the vehicle in the 2900 block of South Hughes Avenue when someone walked up to them and opened fire at about 11:30 p.m.

Police said the man — later identified as 47-year-old Reginald Abbs — was shot in the head. The woman sitting next to him was wounded when a bullet grazed her arm, but she managed to climb out of the vehicle and run to a nearby car wash where she collapsed.

Paramedics rushed Abbs to John Peter Smith Hospital in critical condition. Police said he was pronounced deceased shortly after.

Authorities said they expect the woman to recover.

Police said the gunman, who was unknown to the victims, ran away before officers arrived.
