Houston police say an officer fatally shot a man who stabbed his mother during an argument in an apartment.
Police responding to a domestic disturbance call Thursday evening encountered 22-year-old Matthew Swiney, who answered the door armed with a hammer.
Authorities say Swiney then shut the door and barricaded himself in the apartment. Officers heard a woman, later identified as Swiney's 47-year-old mother, screaming. The officers saw through a window Swiney armed with a knife and dragging his mother.
Police say after Swiney ignored multiple commands to drop the knife, Officer A. Garza Jr. shot him. Swiney died at a local hospital. His mother, who had stab wounds, was listed in serious condition.
The shooting is being reviewed by police and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
