Man Trying to Elude Police Hit, Killed by Motorist

Guns, shell casings found in man's car after brief police chase, police say

A man was killed Sunday night after he ran onto a highway while attempting to elude a DeSoto police officer, officials say.

According to the DeSoto Police Department, an officer sitting in his patrol car near the intersection of Ezell Drive and North Hampton Road heard multiple gunshots and soon after observed a driver leave the area without turning on his headlights.

The officer tried to pull the driver over, but the driver refused to stop and instead headed north on North Hampton Road and into Dallas. The driver then crashed along the 8700 block of South Hampton Road, exited the vehicle and ran toward Interstate 20.

The driver, identified by police as 38-year-old Kendrick Demon Young, ran onto the eastbound lanes of I-20 where he was struck and killed by a passing motorist.

Inside Young's vehicle, police recovered an AK-47 rifle, a .22 rifle and two spent shell casings from inside the vehicle. Police did not say if the spent casings were connected to the shots heard by the officer, or if there were any reported injuries related to the gunfire.

One officer sustained a mild ankle sprain during the incident. No other injuries were reported.
