Man Starts Fire by Pouring Hot Coals Down Trash Chute: DFR

A Dallas apartment complex was evacuated Monday night after a fire broke out in the basement.

A resident was using a charcoal grill inside an apartment in the 1400 block of Belleview Street in the Cedars neighborhood.

He later disposed of the still-smoldering coals by pouring them down a trash chute. The hot coals sparked a fire in the trash container, according to Dallas Fire-Rescue officials.

The area was equipped with a sprinkler system, which extinguished the flames before it grew out of control.

No injuries were reported.

The resident likely received a ticket, but no charges were filed.
