Man Sentenced to 45 Years in Austin Sword Slaying

A man has been sentenced to 45 years in prison after stabbing a man to death with a sword outside of an Austin pawn shop.

The Austin American-Statesman reports that a Travis County judge on Monday sentenced 37-year-old Thomas Brock in the May 2012 slaying of 57-year-old Luis Hernandez Vigil.

Brock pleaded guilty to murder last week.

Brock told the court he understood the charges against him but that his life had been altered when he, at birth, was taken before Satan and replicated by a machine.

District Judge David Wahlberg had ruled that Brock knew right from wrong and was competent to stand trial.

The judge said Brock seemed to be responding well to the structured environment while in custody and the effort to treat his mental health.
