Man Seen on Video Breaking into Highland Park Cars

Police in Highland Park are on the lookout for a bandit who has been breaking into cars.

In one night, police believe the same man broke into four different cars, all on the same block.

In each instance, he stole credit cards and spent hundreds of dollars at department stores and pharmacies, barely hours after the crime.

“He’s pretty bold. It's rare that we see it. He went to the upper driveway of the house,” said Sgt. Lance Koppa, with Highland Park DPS.

In one surveillance video, the thief is mere inches away from a back door. He slides between the house and car to check to see if the door is unlocked. In this case, the car was locked.

Another camera captures him trolling the street checking door handles on cars.

“Criminals are looking for that opportunity,” Koppa explained. “If it's unlocked they’re only inside your car for maybe 10 seconds and they move on to the next one.”

Police are working with stores in which purchases were made and are gathering more images of the man behind the break-ins.

If you have any information on the heists call Highland Park DPS at 214-521-5000.
